Magnesium, the life saver!

Got a twitchy eyelid or cheek?  Getting leg or foot cramps, especially at night?  Or, this one’s for my ladies, are you having the dreaded night sweats or hot flashes?

Magnesium can help reduce hot flashes and night sweats and is safer than hormone replacement therapy, especially in women with breast cancer or other hormone driven cancer histories or predispositions.  Magnesium can also improve symptoms associated with PCOS and pre-menstrual syndrome.

Low magnesium contributes to oxidative stress, inflammation and elevated C-reactive protein levels.  Magnesium deficiency is also associated with low bone density and osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, and inflammatory disorders of all sorts.

Magnesium is necessary for nervous system health and relaxation and can improve anxiety/depression and insomnia issues.  Magnesium aids memory and protects against cognitive decline, helping the brain form new neural connections.

Excessive calcium intake may negatively affect magnesium absorption, increasing magnesium requirements and leading to subclinical magnesium deficiency.  If you take both, a 1:1 ratio may be safest and separating your calcium and magnesium supplements may allow better absorption of both.

Taking too much magnesium may cause loose stools.  If you are aiming for higher doses, it’s best to gradually increase your dose for better tolerance.  Effective magnesium dosing can start around 200mg but the most benefit is found in the 400-600mg range or higher.  Studies aimed at reducing hot flashes have used close to 2000mg, so if you aren’t getting relief, try increasing the dose and/or changing the form of magnesium that you are using.
